Most manors were far away from towns. It was part of the fief. The lord ruled over his manor including the people who lived there. He depended on the wealth his manor produced. Peasants and serfs were considered to be apart o the manor. The manor had to be self-sufficient. They had to produce everything it needed. The lord who owned the manor collected taxes from the peasants living there.
