The church was one of the most unifying elements of medieval times. Nobles, peasants, and tradesmen were affected by the rulings of the church. They controlled over religion, economic, and political areas. The clergy were the religions people of the middle ages. The pope was first, then the bishop, next the priest and monks, than nuns. The pope as the head of the church had many influences over the king and total control over the clergy. People were taxed to support the church. In return they got "everlasting life". Bishops were accepted in court and basically lived the same life style as nobles. Priest weren't rich like the bishop. The bishop fulfilled the needs of priest. Priest cared for the spiritual life of people.
Children were taught prayers and to go to church every week. Monks were scholarly. They could read and write in Latin. They often shaved a bald spot in the middle of their heads. People thought that monks served as how a perfect Christian should act. And they did. Nuns were very holy and lived in convent. They were not as scholarly as monks were.
