Castles played a major roll in medieval living. Castles were first inspired by the Normans. They were call Motte and Bailey castles. Castles were built by wood at first but that soon stopped because they would catch on fire easily. Also the wood would rot easily too so they converted to stone. Castles showed the wealth of the people who lived in it. Nobles and lords were the main people who lived in these castles. In the middle ages castles had small rooms that were only lit by tiny windows. They also had little furniture.
A visitor of the castle had to cross a draw bridge to go over the moat. If they were allowed to go in the iron gates were lifted up. There technology was pretty modern so these gates were lifted up by pulleys. The lord and his family lived in the part of the castle called the "keep". Under the keep was the dungeon. Inside the castle nobles would entertain themselves by playing few board games, especially chess. They watched jesters perform pranks and listened to stories. Nobles and lords became attached to their castles as technology developed and they began to grow bigger.
